According to Disabled World, currently around 10% of the total world's population, or roughly 650 million people, live with a disability. That may not be persuasive enough but according to the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Employment, one in seven people in Ontario have a disability. Total number of people with disabilities in Ontario is 1.7 million. There are four main groups of people with disabilities:

  • Visually impaired – lower vision, blind, and color-blind. They use screen magnifiers, screen readers to read websites for them.
  • Hearing impaired – need text descriptions for video and audio files.
  • Physically disabled – handicapped, paralyzed but also people with arthritis or shaky hands. They use a special trackball mouse or other devices to navigate websites via keyboard.
  • People with cognitive disabilities – have difficulty understand websites. These are people with learning disabilities, autism, ADD, memory problems etc. They require simply written, logically organized websites.

In Ontario that is: total population 13.5 million people. 1.5 million Ontarians have a disability. 1.9 million are seniors. 150,000 newcomers to Canada settle in Ontario. According to Census 2011, 6.6 million persons reported speaking a language other than English or French at home.
